Internal Medicine Certification Exam (ABIM) Overview
Internal medicine is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), which credentials physicians in internal medicine and its subspecialties. Its certification exam — commonly called the ABIM — is what an internist passes to become board certified and to hold privileges at most hospitals. How the ABIM Is Administered
The ABIM is a one-day exam that runs roughly ten hours. It is divided into four sessions of up to sixty single-best-answer, multiple-choice questions each. Most questions describe a clinical scenario — a brief statement, case history, graph, or image — followed by a lead-in question and a list of options.
What the ABIM Covers
The exam measures your ability to make sound diagnostic and management decisions for the common and the rare problems a certified internist encounters. Content spans cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, pulmonary disease, rheumatology and orthopedics, endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, medical oncology, nephrology and urology, hematology, and more.
