Internal Medicine Certification Exam (ABIM) Overview
What Is The American Board of Internal Medicine?
The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certifies physicians in internal medicine and internal medicine sub-specialties. The Internal Medicine Certification Exam (the "ABIM") is required for board certification in internal medicine, and to obtain privileges at most hospitals. The ABIM is designed to evaluate the medical knowledge, diagnostic reasoning, and clinical judgment skills expected of certified internists in the broad practice area of internal medicine.
How Is The ABIM Administered?
The ABIM is a one-day exam that is approximately 10-hours long. The exam is divided into four sessions, each containing up to 60 single-best-answer multiple-choice questions that primarily describe clinical scenarios. Questions will consist of a brief statement, case history, graph or picture followed by a question and a list of possible options.
What Does The ABIM Cover?
The ABIM tests your ability to make appropriate diagnostic and management decisions for common as well as rare clinical problems for which patients may consult a certified internist. The content categories include: Cardiovascular Disease, Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Disease, Rheumatology and Orthopedics, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Medical Oncology, Nephrology and Urology, Hematology, and more.
